The students have been working so hard since the New Year started, cannot believe it's already the end of January! We've started giving out their merit stripes to track their progress toward their next belt.
1st stripe - 5 classes
2nd stripe - 10 classes
3rd stripe - 15 classes
by Testing night, probably 18-20 classes
We are currently giving out 2nd stripes. Keep up the great work.
January is Goals month - what are your martial art goals? Having a challenging, yet achievable goal makes all the hard work matter. Otherwise, we lose focus!
NEXT PROMOTIONAL TESTING LAST WEEK OF FEBRUARY, MORE DETAILS TO FOLLOW.
GOT GEAR? White-Orange belts should have their hand pads and mouth pieces (and gear bag); Yellow belts foot pads and athletic supporter and cup plus chest guards; Camo belts, head gear and face shields. Please label everything! Check your bags regularly to make sure your gear is in there and no one else is. We are currently on the lookout for a black hand pad with red stripes on it that belongs to Madelyn. There is another black hand pads with different red stripes currently in lost and found...
For gear, we place prepaid orders approximately once per month. Fill out order forms and return with payment to Mrs. Ewing to be included in next order. We are also currently on the Bahng Mahng Ee, each student needs to have their OWN weapon, please. Less sharing means less germs!

- When should I get there? - There are several options depending on what you would like your level of participation to be. There will be an email to everyone registered with the finalized schedule of events. In that email will have each ring assignment and approximately when they are competing. If you would like to get more out of the experience, in the morning (10 AM) there will be a bow in that recognizes the high ranking leaders and accomplished competitors in the region. Immediately following that is a Team Competition, these are a lot of fun to watch. In between times there will be lots of extra activities for entertainment between competitions. If you are an adult black belt, please arrive by 7:30 AM for the Black Belt Meeting.
- What do I wear? - Students/Competitors should wear their full ATA Uniform (Dobok). Black Belts are encouraged to be in uniform at all times during the event. If you are competing in Xtreme/Creative/Team competitions, you may wear the black ATA creative uniform during those events only. You must be in Traditional Uniform the rest of the time. Adult black belts, please remember this is an official ATA event, as such all adult ATA black belts should be in Uniform or dress attire regardless of whether you are competing/judging.
- What can I compete in? - Your best bet is to ask your instructor. In all rings/divisions students may compete in the following events: Traditional Forms, Traditional Weapons, Traditional Sparring (One-Steps for White-Yellow), and Combat Sparring (Camo Belt Kids and Higher). Students may also compete in Creative/Xtreme Forms and Weapons as long as they compete in the Traditional counterpart.
- What do the judges scores mean? - Again, best bet is to go to your instructor. Scoring on forms and weapons range from 9.0 to 9.9 and the score is subjective to the judges experience and relative to the other competitors in the ring. Sparring scoring is point based and point value is dependent on target area and difficulty of technique. There are a lot of factors to the scoring in an ATA Tournament, but please keep in mind that every judge is volunteering their time and skill to provide the best experience we can offer. If you have any comments or issues, please find a tournament staff member to help you.
- What if I find out I can't make it after I register? - Eventbrite allows for refunds, at any time before the tournament, you can make changes to your registration including cancellation (refund).
- Anything else I should know? - A few reminders: We will strive to assure every student has a positive experience, please keep in mind that tournaments can be quite long as well as unpredictable when it comes to scheduling rings. Make sure you listen for any announcements regarding your staging group/ring. Please, no coaching from the sidelines (cheering is ok, but nothing like "Kick him in the head Jimmy!"). All male competitors need an athletic groin protector to compete in sparring events. Always remember that "To Compete is to Win!"
Share this event on Facebook and Twitter We hope you can make it! Cheers, ATA | | | | | | | | |
